Etymology: < scientific Latin Ornithomimosauria, infraorder name (R. Barsbold, 1974: see N. N. Kramarenko et al. Sovmestnaja Sovetsko-Mongol′skaja Paleontol. Eksped. Trudy No. 3. 74) < Ornithomim- (in Ornithomimidae : see ornithomimid adj. and n.) + -o- -o- connective + -sauria (see Sauria n.); compare -saur comb. form.

Palaeontology.

Any member of a mainly Cretaceous group of bipedal theropod dinosaurs (infraorder Ornithomimosauria), including ornithomimids, whose light build, long hindlimbs, and typically toothless, beak-like jaws resemble those of an ostrich.
