Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French arace.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman arace, arache, arasche, orasche (13th cent.; compare Middle French, French arroche (15th cent.); earlier in Old French as arepe (12th cent.): see further dicussion in Trésor de la langue française at arroche) < classical Latin ātriplic-, ātriplex < ancient Greek ἀτράϕαξυς, also ἀνδράϕαξυς, and (Hellenistic) ἀδράϕαξυς, ἀτράϕαξις, of unknown origin, probably a loanword. Compare Italian atrepice, atreplice, atriplice (14th cent.).The forms in -ge arose in accordance with the general phonetic development from the 15th to the mid 17th centuries whereby fricatives came to be voiced after a weak vowel.
Any of numerous succulent inconspicuous-flowered plants of the genus Atriplex, of the goosefoot family ( Chenopodiaceae); spec. (a) (more fully garden orache) A. hortensis (also called mountain spinach), a once-popular pot-herb used like spinach, now more often grown (usually in a form with red or purple foliage) as an ornamental plant; (b) (more fully common orache) A. patula, a widespread weed of waste ground (cf. fat-hen n.).
