Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin ora pro nobis.

Etymology: < post-classical Latin ora pro nobis, literally ‘pray for us’ (Vulgate, e.g. Jeremiah 42:2, 42:20), a plea for intercession; used as a response in various litanies, as the Litany of the Blessed Virgin, the Litany of the Saints, etc. < classical Latin ōra , 2nd person imperative singular of ōrāre orate v. + pro pro prep. + nōbīs , dative of nōs , 1st person plural pronoun (see nosism n.).

Christian Church (now chiefly Roman Catholic Church).

As a plea for divine intercession: ‘Pray for us’. Also as n.: such a plea; a prayer or litany which incorporates this as a response. Also in extended (frequently mocking or humorous) use.
