Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek ὀπ- , ὄψ , εἶδος , -scope comb. form.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ὀπ-, ὄψ voice ( < the same Indo-European base as classical Latin vōx voice n.) + εἶδος form, image (see eidos n.) + -scope comb. form. N.E.D. (1903) gives the pronunciation as (opəi·dŏskoup) /əʊˈpaɪdəskəʊp/.
Obsolete. rare.
A particular instrument invented for giving a visual representation of sound.The instrument consists of a tube closed at one end by a taught membrane with a small mirror attached to its centre, which vibrates in response to sound entering the tube at the open end, thereby causing a spot of light reflected by the mirror on to a screen to vibrate with varying amplitude and frequency according to the intensity and frequency of the sound.
