Etymology: Partly < oppress v. + -er suffix1, and partly < Anglo-Norman oppressour and Middle French oppresseur a person who oppresses (c1350; French oppresseur ), and its etymon classical Latin oppressor a person who oppresses < oppress- , past participial stem of opprimere (see oppress v.) + -or -or suffix.With the form appressour compare the β forms s.vv. oppress v., oppression n.
