Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin opposit-, oppōnere.
Etymology: < classical Latin opposit-, past participial stem of oppōnere to set against (see oppone v., oppose v.). Compare opposite adj. (compare forms s.v.), and slightly later posit v. N.E.D. (1903) gives the pronunciation as (ǫ̆pǫ·zit) /əˈpɒzɪt/.
