Etymology: < scientific Latin opponens pollicis (B. S. Albinus Hist. musculatorum hominis (1634) iv. 660) < classical Latin oppōnēns , (see opponens n.) + pollicis , genitive singular of pollex thumb (see pollex n.). Compare earlier opponent n. 3.

Anatomy and Zoology.

A muscle of the hand, originating from the trapezium and flexor retinaculum and inserting into the first metacarpal, which serves to cup the palm and assist in the opposing of the thumb to the other fingers. Also opponens pollicis muscle.
