Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin oppōnere.
Etymology: < classical Latin oppōnere to place in front of or against, to place as an obstacle, to set against or in opposition, to set one thing against another, to argue in reply, object, to expose to < ob- ob- prefix + pōnere to place (see ponent n. and adj.1). Compare Spanish oponer (mid 13th cent.), Italian opporre (end of the 13th cent.). Compare earlier oppose v. Compare also compone v., depone v., dispone v., expone v., interpone v., presuppone v., propone v., repone v., and suppone v.
Chiefly Scottish. Obsolete.
