Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Ophiura.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Ophiura, genus name (Lamarck Syst. des animaux sans vertèbres (1801) 350), after earlier use as a specific name (in the genus Asterias) by Linnaeus in Systema Naturæ (ed. 10, 1758) 662 < post-classical Latin ophiurus (1714 or earlier) < ancient Greek ὄϕις serpent (see ophio- comb. form) + οὐρά tail (see uro- comb. form²), with allusion to the creature's long snake-like arms.

Zoology.

A genus of brittlestars of the family Ophiuridae; (also ophiura) a brittlestar of this genus; (formerly also) †any brittlestar (obsolete).
