Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin ophiomantia.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin ophiomantia (1683 or earlier: compare quot. 1683) < ophio- ophio- comb. form + ancient Greek μαντεία (see -mancy comb. form). Compare French †ophiomance (1721), ophiomancie (1721), ophiomantie (1838).1683 J. J. Hoffman Lexicon Universale (new ed.) Ophiomantia, Græcè ὀϕιομαντεία, divinatio ex serpentibus est, cujus exempla passim obvia.
