Etymology: < scientific Latin Ophiocephalus, variant (compare ophio- comb. form) of Ophicephalus, genus name (M. E. Bloch Allgemeine Naturgeschichte der Fische VII. (1793) 137; < ancient Greek ὄϕις serpent (see ophio- comb. form) + -κέϕαλος : see -cephalous comb. form) + -oid suffix. Compare Byzantine Greek ὀϕιοκέϕαλος ophiocephale adj., French ophiocéphales, genus name (1803).Later dictionaries also occasionally record the form Ophicephaloid.

Zoology. Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
