Etymology: < ancient Greek ὄγκωσις swelling, increase of bulk ( < ὀγκοῦν to distend ( < ὄγκος : see onco- comb. form) + -ωσις -osis suffix) + -meter comb. form2. N.E.D. (1902) gives the pronunciation as (ǫŋkosi·mĭtəɹ) /ɒŋkəʊˈsɪmɪtə(r)/.
Obsolete.
An instrument for measuring variations in the volume (and hence the density) of a molten metal or other substance.
