释义

ooliten.

Brit. /ˈəʊəlʌɪt/, U.S. /ˈoʊoʊˌlaɪt/
Forms: 1800s– oolite, 1800s– oölite.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; originally modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: oo- comb. form, -lite comb. form1.
Etymology: < oo- comb. form + -lite comb. form1, originally after German Oolit (1799 in the passage translated in quot. 1802 at sense 1; 1798 as oolith ), so called on account of the resemblance of the granules to the roe of a fish. With sense 1 compare post-classical Latin oolithes (1740 or earlier; 1758 as oolites ), French oolithe (1753; 1752 as oolcïhe [sic]; 1762 as oolites , masculine plural), Swedish oolit (1798 as oolith ), Italian oolite (1803). Compare earlier oolith n.The following quot. apparently shows an isolated earlier borrowing of post-classical Latin oolites:1788 Trans. Royal Soc. Edinb. 1 252 Among these, are different species of oolites marble.
