Etymology: < French oogone (1863 or earlier) or its etymon scientific Latin oogonium oogonium n. Compare earlier oogonium n., and also spermogone n., hormogone n.H. Cottez Dict. des structures du vocab. savant (ed. 4, 1985) at oo-) attributes the earliest attestation of French oogone to G. Thuret (1854), but this has not been verified and is perhaps mistaken.
