Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on an Italian lexical item. Etymons: ontology n., -ism suffix.
Etymology: < ontology n. + -ism suffix, after Italian ontologismo (1840 in Gioberti). Compare French ontologisme (1854 in this sense; 1828 in the sense ‘tendency to ascribe real existence to purely conceptual entities’), German Ontologismus (1821). Compare earlier ontologist n.
Theology.
A mystical system based on the belief that God is directly and immediately apprehended by the mind as the first object of human intelligence.
