Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by derivation. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: ontologic adj., -al suffix1; Latin ontologia , -ical suffix.
Etymology: Either < ontologic adj. + -al suffix1 (compare -ical suffix), or < post-classical Latin ontologia ontology n. + -ical suffix (compare -logical comb. form).
1. Of, relating to, or of the nature of ontology; metaphysical; (Theology) ontological argument n. the argument that God, being defined as the most great or perfect being, must exist, since a God who exists is greater than a God who does not.
