单词 onslaught
释义

onslaughtn.

Brit. /ˈɒnslɔːt/, U.S. /ˈɑnˌslɔt/, /ˈɔnˌslɔt/, /ˈɑnˌslɑt/
Forms: 1600s anslaight, 1600s onslat, 1600s onslatt, 1600s onslought, 1600s anslacht (Scottish), 1600s 1800s– onslaught, 1800s– onslaucht (Scottish).
Origin: Apparently formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a Dutch lexical item. Etymons: on- prefix, slaught n.
Etymology: Apparently < on- prefix + slaught n., after early modern Dutch aanslag attack (now spec. ‘assassination attempt’); compare German Anschlag (criminal) attack. Compare also Old High German anaslaht shower (of rain), Middle Low German anslachte weir.Perhaps brought to Britain by soldiers who served in the Low Countries during the conflict with Spain between 1568 and 1648. Apparently not used in the 18th cent. (cited by Johnson only from Hudibras: see quot. 1663 at sense 1). Reintroduced by Scott in the 19th cent., and now common.
1. A fierce or destructive attack. Now frequently figurative.
