Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin opsōnium; Greek ὀψώνιον.
Etymology: < classical Latin opsōnium, obsōnium provisions for a meal, victuals, or its etymon Hellenistic Greek ὀψώνιον provisions, usually wages, pay (for the purchase of ὄψον ) < ὄψον cooked food, relish, rich fare, delicacies, of unknown origin + ὠνιος for sale (see oniomania n.).The plural form opsonia is after Latin opsonia (plural) or Greek ὀψώνια (plural).
Obsolete. rare.
Any food eaten along with bread.In quot. 1881: spec. vegetables.
