Etymology: < classical Latin obsōnāre, opsōnāre to purchase provisions, to cater (see opsonation n.) + -ic suffix. Compare opsonin n. (first attested in the same source: see quot. 1903). Compare slightly later French opsonique (dated 1904 in Robert Dict. alphabétique et analogique (1986)).
