1951 G. Wald in Science 15 Mar. 287/2 Rhodopsin and porphyropsin are carotenoid-proteins—proteins bearing carotenoid prosthenic groups to which they owe their color and sensitivity to light... The protein probably varies from one animal to another; it may be called opsin, and named for the animal of origin.
1970 R. W. McGilvery Biochemistry xxvi. 644 The interaction of the conjugated hydrocarbon chain with the opsins creates the particular absorption spectrum of the visual pigments, and therefore the spectral sensitivity of the eye.
2002 Nature 31 Jan. 493/1 Melanopsin, the only opsin known to exist in retinal ganglion cells, is indeed expressed in the dendrites of this small set of retinal ganglion cells.
