Etymology: < Italian opera buffa (early 18th cent.) < opera opera n.1 + buffa , feminine of buffo (adjective) comic (17th cent.), probably < buffa jest (see buffoon n.). Compare French opéra buffa (1759 or earlier), opéra bouffe opera bouffe n.In plural form opere buffe after the Italian plural form.
(Italian) comic opera, with dialogue in recitative and characters drawn from everyday life; an example of this. Frequently attributive or as adj. Also in extended use.
