Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin opōricē.
Etymology: < classical Latin opōricē a medicine made from autumn fruits and wine, used to treat dysentery (Pliny), use as noun of Hellenistic Greek ὀπωρική , feminine singular of ὀπωρικός of fruit < ancient Greek ὀπώρα late summer, fruit-time, fruit ( < ὀπι- (see opistho- comb. form) + a second element with the sense ‘summer’ < the same Indo-European base as earn v.1) + -ικός -ic suffix. N.E.D. (1903) gives the pronunciation as (oə·ri) /əʊˈpɔərɪsiː/.
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
