Origin: Probably of multiple origins. A borrowing from Greek. Probably also partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: Greek ὀπισθόδομος, French opisthodome.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ὀπισθόδομος opisthodomos n., probably partly via French opisthodome (1752: see quot. 1926). Compare classical Latin opisthodomus (see opisthodomos n.), Italian opistodomo (a1798). Compare earlier opisthodomos n.
Greek Archaeology.
= opisthodomos n. Also: a room at the back of an ancient Greek house.
