Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Greek ὤνιος , -mania comb. form.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ὤνιος for sale ( < ὦνος price paid, purchase ( < ὠνεῖσθαι to buy, cognate with classical Latin vēnum that which is sold or for sale: see venal adj.2) + -ιος , suffix forming adjectives) + -mania comb. form, after German Oniomanie (1892 in the passage translated in quot. 1895).
A compulsive urge to buy things; an uncontrollable desire for acquisition.
