Past tense Old English angan (1st and 3rd singular indicative), Old English angann (1st and 3rd singular indicative), Old English ongann (1st and 3rd singular indicative), Old English ongonn (1st and 3rd singular indicative), Old English ongunne (2nd singular indicative), Old English angunnan (plural indicative), Old English angunnon (plural indicative), Old English ongunnan (plural indicative), Old English ongunnun (plural indicative), Old English ongannon (Northumbrian, rare), Old English–early Middle English ongan (1st and 3rd singular indicative), Old English–early Middle English ongon (1st and 3rd singular indicative), Old English–early Middle English ongunnon (plural indicative), early Middle English onngann (1st and 3rd singular indicative) ( Ormulum). Past participle Old English angunnen, Old English ongunnen, Old English ongunnan (rare).
Origin: Apparently inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: Apparently < the Germanic base of on- prefix + the Germanic base of the second element of begin v.1 (see discussion at that entry). The attestation of parallel forms of the corresponding noun angin n. in several Germanic languages suggests that the verb may also have existed in Germanic. Compare agin v., and later gin v.1, and also angin n.Perhaps showing a merger of more than one prefixed form of the base (see discussion at on- prefix); compare Old English (Anglian) inginnan (compare in- prefix1), and also Middle Dutch ontghinnen , ontginnen to begin, to open with a sharp tool, to wound, to undertake, Middle Low German entginnen , enginnen to open with a sharp tool, Old High German inginnan to begin, to happen (Middle High German enginnen ), representing formations in either the cognate of and- prefix or in- prefix1. The word is common in Old English, but did not survive beyond the early Middle English period.
