Origin: A borrowing from Maori. Etymon: Maori ongaonga.
Etymology: < Maori ongaonga (1820 as O'nga ónga in S. Lee & T. Kendall Gram. & Vocab. Lang. N.Z.).
New Zealand.
The New Zealand tree nettle, Urtica ferox, which has virulent stinging hairs and grows into a shrub of up to 10 feet (3 metres) in height.
