Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin opus signīnum.
Etymology: < classical Latin opus signīnum flooring material consisting of broken tiles and other fragments mixed with lime mortar < opus work (see opus n.) + signīnum , neuter of signīnus Signian < Signia (modern Segni ), the name of a town in Latium which was famous for its tiles + -īnus -ine suffix1.References to opus signinum (or signinum) occur in the works of Columella, Vitruvius, and Pliny: see Oxford Lat. Dict. s.v. Signinus. A description of the making of opus signinum is found in Vitruvius De Architectura 8. 6. 14.
Archaeology.
A Roman flooring material consisting of broken tiles and other fragments mixed with lime mortar.

1745 tr. L. J. M. Columella Of Husbandry i. vi. 34 They, it seems, contrived a plaister or flooring made with bruised tiles, or sheards of earthen vessels, and lime, tempered together. With this composition they made very durable floors, &c. and this they called opus Signinum.
1856 M. L. Booth tr. Marble-worker's Man. 172 Sometimes they only mixed crushed tile with the coating, which gave it the appearance of a kind of red granite, and also increased its solidity. This last composition was called opus signinum.
1937 Discovery July 208/1 A [Roman] floor of bits of stone and tile bound together with cement (opus signinum).
1974 Encycl. Brit. Micropædia VII. 557/3 Opus signinum was the prevalent form of pavement in Roman houses from the 1st century bc to about the 2nd century ad when it was rapidly replaced in main rooms by patterned pavement mosaics of the tessellated variety.
2000 J. Crook Archit. Setting Cult Saints vi. 226 In 1991 I..discovered surviving areas of opus signinum pavement on a buff-coloured fill.
