Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Barberton.
Etymology: < Barberton, the name of a town in Mpumalanga province, South Africa < the name of Graham Hoare Barberton (1835–88), who discovered a gold-bearing reef there in 1884.

3. South African slang. Frequently with lower-case initial. An illicitly brewed alcoholic drink of varying composition, typically brewed from bread, malt, sugar, yeast, and warm water. Before 1962, black South Africans were legally prohibited from producing, selling, or consuming most types of alcohol; this type of alcohol was thus chiefly produced and sold at unlicensed establishments.
