Etymology: < classical Latin optimum the best, that which is best, use as noun of neuter singular of optimus best < a first element perhaps cognate with op- , ops power, ability, aid (see opulent adj.) + -imus , extended form of suffix forming superlatives (see -most suffix). Compare French optimum (1771 in an isolated attestation; otherwise from 1913). Compare also etymological note s.v. optimism n.
