Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin optimatia.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin optimatia government by the nobles or upper classes (16th cent.) < classical Latin optimāt- , optimās (see optimate n. and adj.) + -ia -y suffix3; compare -acy suffix.From the late 17th cent. the word came to be largely superseded by aristocracy n.
Now rare.
1. The upper classes; the nobility, the aristocracy. Also figurative. Obsolete.
