Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements. Etymons: Greek ὀπτός , -i- connective, -graph comb. form.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek ὀπτός seen (see optic adj. and n.) + -i- connective + -graph comb. form.
An apparatus used to assist in drawing, esp. the drawing of landscapes. Obsolete.The apparatus consists of a telescope placed in a vertical position so that light from the object is reflected from an inclined mirror through the objective and then from another through the eyepiece, in the focus of which is placed a movable plane glass having at its centre a small dot, which can be moved over the outline of the image.
