Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Opīmiānus.

Etymology: < classical Latin Opīmiānus laid down in the consulship of Lucius Opimius, 121 b.c. < the name of Lucius Opīmius + -ānus -an suffix. Compare Middle French Opimien (1562 in vin Opimien in Du Pinet's translation of Pliny: compare quot. 1601).

Roman History.

Designating a celebrated ancient Roman wine of the vintage of a.u.c. 633, produced when Opimius was consul. Occasionally in extended use: any wine of a premium vintage. Frequently in Opimian wine [after classical Latin vīnum Opīmiānum] .
