Compare French ophtalmoscopie (c1650 denoting the art of discerning character by studying the eyes, 1855 denoting the use of an ophthalmoscope; also †ophthalmoscopie).Compare isolated earlier borrowing of the post-classical Latin word as an unassimilated loan:1728 E. Chambers Cycl. Ophthalmoscopia, that Branch of Physiognomy which considers a Person's Eyes; to deduce thence the Knowledge of his Temperament, Humour, and Manners.
