Etymology: In sense 1 < scientific Latin Oliva, genus name (J. G. Bruguière 1789, in Encyclopédie méthodique: hist. nat. des vers I. p. xv), specific application of classical Latin olīva olive n.1 (compare also sense 8 at that entry). In senses 2 and 3 directly < classical Latin olīva.
1. Zoology. (In form Oliva) a genus of marine gastropod molluscs of the family Olividae, characterized by glossy cylindrical shells; (also oliva; more fully oliva shell) a member of this genus; an olive shell.
