Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Greek ὀλισθεῖν, στρῶμα.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ὀλισθεῖν to slip, glide (see olistolith n.) + στρῶμα bed (see stroma n.).
Geology.
A sedimentary deposit composed of a heterogeneous mixture of materials and formed by the sliding or slumping of semi-fluid sediment.

Flores in Proc. 4th World Petroleum Congr. 1955 i. 122/2 By Olistostromes we define those sedimentary deposits occurring within normal geologic sequences that are sufficiently continuous to be mappable, and that are characterized by lithologically and/or petrographically heterogeneous materials, more or less intimately admixed, that were accumulated as a semi-fluid body.
