Brit. /ɒˈlɪŋɡəʊ/, U.S. /oʊˈlɪŋɡoʊ/
Origin: Probably of multiple origins. A borrowing from Quichean. Probably also a borrowing from Spanish. Etymons: Quichean ullimko; Spanish olingo.
Etymology: < Quichean ullimko, literally ‘loud yeller’ (with reference to its loud call) < ullim- to yell, howl, cry + -kou strong, probably via Central American Spanish (Honduras) olingo (although this is first attested slightly later: 1927).
An arboreal nocturnal mammal of the genus Bassaricyon (family Procyonidae), resembling a kinkajou but with a long, non-prehensile tail, native to the tropical forests of Central America and northwestern South America.Up to six species have been recognized, but they are now frequently considered to belong to the one species B. gabbii.
