Etymology: < post-classical Latin oligotrophia (1626 or earlier) < Hellenistic Greek ὀλιγοτροϕία little nourishment < ancient Greek ὀλιγοτρόϕος giving little nourishment, taking little nourishment ( < ὀλιγο- oligo- comb. form + -τροϕος , combining form < an ablaut variant of the base of τρέϕειν to nourish: see tropho- comb. form) + -ία -y suffix³. In sense 2 after German Oligotrophie (A. Thienemann Die Binnengewässer Mitteleuropas (1925) iv. 198). Compare French oligotrophie (1721 in medical use; compare sense 1).
