Etymology: < oligo- comb. form + -trophic comb. form. In sense 1 after ancient Greek ὀλιγότροϕος giving little nourishment. In sense 2 after German oligotroph, adjective (C. A. Weber 1907, in Beiblatt zu den Bot. Jahrb. 90 27).
