Etymology: < ancient Greek ὀλιγαρχικός of, relating to, or of the nature of an oligarchy, supporting or advocating oligarchy < ὀλιγαρχία oligarchy n. + -ικός -ic suffix, perhaps via Middle French, French oligarchique (late 14th cent.) and post-classical Latin oligarchicus (c1343 in a British source). Compare Italian oligarchico (1600), Spanish oligárquico (1726). Compare earlier oligarchical adj.
