Frequently with capital initial.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Urdu. Partly a borrowing from Persian. Etymons: Urdu umrā; Persian umrā, umarā.
Etymology: < Urdu umrā and its etymon Persian umrā, colloquial form of umarā (plural) nobles, grandees, (singular) a noble < Arabic umarā' , plural of amīr commander, lord (see emir n.). In some of the early forms via Portuguese; in plural form ommeraudes via French. With the use of the Arabic plural as a singular in Urdu and Indo-Persian, compare:1886 H. Yule & A. C. Burnell Hobson-Jobson 486/1 This is properly..an Arabic plural;..and should be applied collectively to the higher officials at a Mahommedan Court, especially that of the Great Mogul. But in old European narratives it is used as a singular for a lord or grandee of that court; and, indeed, in Hindustani the word was similarly used, for we have a H. plural umarāyān=omrahs. This usage of the plural as a singular is not found in the modern Persian of Iran, however.
Now historical.
A grandee of a Muslim court in India, esp. that of the Great Mogul.
