Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Acanthocephala.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Acanthocephala, order name (C. A. Rudolphi 1809, in Entozoorum sive Vermium Intestinalium Hist. Nat. II. i. 5) < post-classical Latin acantho- acantho- comb. form + classical Latin -cephala , neuter plural of -cephalus -cephalous comb. form; compare earlier scientific Latin Acanthocephalus, proposed genus name (1771). Compare French acanthocéphales (1816).
Zoology.
With plural agreement: a small phylum comprising the thorny-headed worms, which are parasitic worms having an eversible proboscis with recurved hooks for attachment to the gut of vertebrates, but having no gut themselves; (also in form acanthocephala) worms of this phylum (collectively or individually), thorny-headed worms.The Acanthocephala are thought to be related to rotifers and nematodes, and they were formerly regarded as a class of the phylum Aschelminthes or group Nemathelminthes.

1822 J. Fleming Philos. Zool. II. 607 Head furnished with a produced snout, armed with reflected bristles. This includes the following genera, (forming the Acanthocephala of Rudolphi), Echinorhynchus, and Hæruca.
1876 H. A. Nicholson Man. Zool. (ed. 2) xxvi. 175 The Acanthocephala are entirely parasitic, vermiform in shape, and devoid of any mouth or alimentary canal.
1915 Jrnl. Parasitol. 1 175 A careful search of the literature has revealed but a single instance in which Acanthocephala have been found parasitic in North American Amphibia.
1953 H. Mellanby Animal Life in Fresh Water (ed. 5) v. 45 The group of animals called acanthocephala or proboscis roundworms are also thought to come somewhere near the Nematodes in their affinities.
2001 G. W. Rouse & F. Pleijel Polychaetes xxix. 126/2 Mattei and Marchand..suggested that Myzostomida and Acanthocephala are sister taxa and should form the phylum Procoelomata.
