Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Omo , -otic suffix.
Etymology: < the name of the Omo River in south-western Ethiopia, in the vicinity of which most of the languages are spoken + -otic suffix.The coinage of the term is generally attributed to H. C. Fleming in 1969, but the word itself has not been traced in the article generally referred to as the coinage source (compare quot. 1969 at sense A.).

A group of languages spoken in western and south-western Ethiopia, forming a subfamily within the Afro-Asiatic language family.Before 1969, these languages were classified as West Cushitic within Afro-Asiatic (cf. quots. 1971, 1998).
