Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: Latin omnivolent- , omnivolens ; omni- comb. form, volent adj.
Etymology: Originally < post-classical Latin omnivolent-, omnivolens (13th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin omni- omni- comb. form + volēns , present participle of velle to wish, want (see volent adj.); compare classical Latin omnivolus . Compare multivolent adj. In later use apparently re-formed < omni- comb. form + volent adj., after omniscient adj., omnipotent adj.
Willing or wishing for everything; determining all things.
