Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: old age n., pension n.
Etymology: < old age n. + pension n. Compare French pension de retraite (1808), pension de vieillesse (1901 or earlier).The term appears not to have been used by W. L. Blackley, whose ‘National Insurance: a Cheap, Practical, and Popular way of Preventing Pauperism’ ( 19th Cent. (1878) Nov.) initiated a campaign for statutory national insurance. It was used in official U.K. legislation from 1908 (Old Age Pensions Act), and was formally (though not popularly) superseded by (State) Retirement Pension in 1946 (National Insurance Act).
A pension paid in certain countries by the state or by a private institution to eligible persons who have reached a specified age. See also pension n. 4.
