Origin: A borrowing from Hebrew. Etymon: Hebrew ʿōlām.
Etymology: < Hebrew ʿōlām long duration, an age, eternity (rendered in the Septuagint by ancient Greek αἰών aeon n.). N.E.D. (1902) gives the pronunciation as (ōulā·m) /əʊˈlɑːm/.
Obsolete. rare.
A vast period of time; an age or cycle of the universe, esp. in Jewish and Christian theology.
