Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Dutch. Or (ii) a borrowing from Portuguese. Etymons: Dutch ola; Portuguese ola.
Etymology: < Dutch ola (1596 in source translated in quot. 15981) or Portuguese ola (1511 as olla ) < Malayalam ōla , Tamil ōlai . Compare Italian olla (1590 in source translated in quot. 1625).
A palm leaf, esp. a leaf or strip of a leaf of the palmyra, traditionally used in Southern India and Sri Lanka for writing on; (also) a letter or document written on such a leaf; = cadjan n. 2.
