Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Oktoberfest.
Etymology: < German Oktoberfest < Oktober October n. + Fest fest n.The Munich festival was first celebrated in October 1810 on the occasion of the wedding of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The Theresienwiese, where the festival takes place, is named after Princess Therese.
Originally: an annual festival celebrated in Munich in late September and early October (often with particular reference to the beer festival which forms part of it). Now (also): a similar autumn festival held elsewhere, esp. by American communities of German origin.
