Etymology: < a West African language, probably Igbo ọ́kụ̀rụ̀. Compare Akan ŋkrũmã, Twi ŋkrakra broth.In U.S. regional form okry with ending remodelled probably after -y suffix6.
1. A tall plant of the mallow family, Abelmoschus (or Hibiscus) esculentus, native to Africa and widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions; the fruit of this plant, a five-sided ‘pod’ (actually a capsule), harvested when immature and mucilaginous and used as a vegetable and for thickening soup and stews. Also called bhindi, gumbo, lady's fingers.
