Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Spanish. Etymons: French hombre; Spanish hombre.
Etymology: < French hombre (1657) or its etymon Spanish hombre (1615 denoting an early four-handed form of the game), specific sense of hombre man (see hombre n.), so called because the lone player is known as el hombre ‘the man’ (compare quot. 1662 at sense 1).In β. forms after French l'hombre with definite article; compare Dutch †lomber, German †Lombre (1697), Lomber (1727 or earlier), Swedish lomber (1697), †lombre (1716).
1. A trick-taking card game for three people using forty cards. Cf. renegado n. 4.For a game of ombre, the eights, nines, and tens are discarded from an ordinary pack of 52 cards. Ombre reached the height of its popularity in the 17th and 18th centuries, with quadrille superseding it as the most fashionable card game c1726. It was the first card game to use the idea of an auction, where players bid for the right to nominate a trump suit.
