a. Ancient Greek History. A competitive sporting and athletic festival held in honour of Zeus on the plain of Olympia in Elis, southern Greece, usually at four- or five-yearly intervals; = Olympian Games n. 1.The Olympic Games were first held in c776 b.c., and were abolished by the Roman emperor Theodosius I in a.d. 394. The Games, which were open to male competitors only, featured a variety of sporting events, including running, wrestling, and javelin-throwing. The festival also included contests in music and literature.
